Surfing Gerupuk Lombok — A Simple Guide.

Just east of Kuta Lombok, the bay of Gerupuk offers some of the most accessible surf in Indonesia. Protected, consistent, and varied — this is where many surfers begin, progress, and return.

Why Gerupuk

Different from most surf destinations.

Instead of one main break, the bay opens up to several waves — each with its own rhythm. The surrounding hills protect the area, creating more forgiving conditions even when the swell picks up.

It's a place where surfing feels approachable. Not rushed. Not crowded in the same way.

"Local boatmen take you out, wait nearby, and bring you back when you're ready. Simple, flexible, easy."

The breaks

Waves for every level.

Within the bay you'll find four distinct breaks — each suited to a different level and style.

01
Beginner

Inside Gerupuk

Soft, rolling waves in a protected part of the bay. The most forgiving break at Gerupuk — ideal for first-timers and anyone building confidence in the water.

02
Beginner — Intermediate

Kid's Point

Gentle, uncrowded, and well-suited for learning. A quieter option within the bay — good for lessons and early sessions without the pressure of a busier lineup.

03
Intermediate

Don-Don

Playful and consistent — one of the most popular peaks at Gerupuk. Great for progression, with enough variety to keep sessions interesting across different tides and swells.

04
Intermediate — Advanced

Outside Gerupuk

Longer rides, more open water, and a stronger swell. Outside Gerupuk rewards surfers who are comfortable reading waves and looking to push their surfing further.

Beginners and experienced surfers. Together.

Gerupuk is one of the few places where a mixed group can be in the water at the same time — without anyone waiting on the shore. Beginners take their first waves at Inside or Kid's Point, while more experienced surfers head to Don-Don or Outside. Different peaks, same bay, same morning.

It's active, but never overwhelming. No one has to compromise.

Timing

When to surf Gerupuk.

Surf is possible year-round, but conditions are at their best between June and September — clean swell and light winds shape the bay consistently. April–May and October–November are solid mid season months. Early mornings and late afternoons can both be magical — sunrise and sunset sessions often bring the calmest conditions, but the right time always depends on tide and swell direction.

Peak seasonJun – SepMost consistent — clean swell, light winds
Mid seasonApr – May · Oct – NovGood conditions, more variable
Wet seasonDec – MarPowerful swells, more wind — experienced surfers
Best time of dayAM or PMSunrise & sunset often magical — tide dependent
