Best Surf Spots in Lombok — A Simple Guide.
Lombok has quietly become one of Indonesia's most rewarding surf destinations. Less crowded than Bali, more open, and still deeply connected to nature — this is where surf trips feel easy again. Most breaks sit along the south coast, within easy reach of Kuta Lombok.
The breaksSix spots worth knowing.
From first-time beginner breaks to fast reef waves — all within 30 minutes of Nusa & Flux Villa.
Gerupuk
Often the starting point. A protected bay with multiple breaks, it offers something for everyone — from first-time surfers to those looking to improve. Inside waves are soft and forgiving. Outside reefs offer longer, more open rides.
Boat access keeps things flexible. Surf here can be as easy — or as challenging — as you want it to be.
Selong Belanak Beach
If you're learning, this is one of the best places in Indonesia to start. A wide bay, sandy bottom, and consistent, gentle waves make it ideal for families and first-timers. Lessons are simple to arrange. Progress comes quickly.
And even if you're not surfing, it's a place you'll want to stay a while.
Tanjung Aan Beach
Closer to Kuta, Tanjung Aan offers relaxed, fun conditions on the right day. Not as consistent as Gerupuk or Selong Belanak, but when it works, it's perfect for mellow sessions and easy rides.
Combine it with a beach day, a swim, or a long lunch nearby.
Mawi Beach
More exposed — and more powerful. Waves break over reef, offering fast, hollow rides when conditions align. Better suited for confident surfers who are comfortable in stronger surf.
Less forgiving. More rewarding.
Are Guling
Tucked into a small bay west of Kuta, Are Guling feels more local, more untouched. Two main peaks offer different directions, often with fewer crowds than elsewhere. A good option when you want something a little quieter — without going far.
Timing
When to surf Lombok.
Surf is possible year-round, but the most consistent conditions arrive between June and September — clean swell, light winds, and reliable days. April–May and October–November are solid mid season months with more variety. Early mornings and late afternoons can both be magical — sunrise and sunset sessions often bring the best light and calmest atmosphere. The right time of day always depends on tide and swell direction, so it's worth checking locally before you go out.
| Peak season | Jun – Sep | Most consistent — clean swell, light winds |
| Mid season | Apr – May · Oct – Nov | Good conditions, more variable |
| Wet season | Dec – Mar | Powerful swells, more wind — experienced surfers |
| Best time of day | AM or PM | Sunrise & sunset often magical — tide dependent |
Close to every break. Easy to reach.
Based in the hills above Kuta, every major surf spot is within 30 minutes. Close enough for early sessions, easy enough to return and reset.
| Gerupuk | 7 min | All levels · boat access |
| Tanjung Aan Beach | 5 min | Mellow · beginner friendly |
| Selong Belanak | 20 min | Best beginner break |
